To address the concern of the purple level air pollution, which has seriously affected peoples life in mid-south Taiwan, Magistrate Li said that the county would request Mailiao power plant to cf. the Taichung thermal power plant and down-load power generation to reduce pollution, and to safeguard county residents health, Li also called on Formosa to cooperate accordingly.
Yunlin Mailiao power plant, the worlds sixth largest coal-fired power plant, has already caused considerable impact on the county neighborhood from its emissions. In comparison with another coal-fired plant, also the worlds largest thermal power plants, the Taidian Taichung thermal power station has accepted the municipal government’s proposed temporary one million kilowatts electricity load shedding. How could Yunlin Mailiao power plant not to shed loading?
Magistrate Li said that the air is especially bad in October every year to March the next year. In addition to the northeast monsoon haze from Mainland China, the steam locomotive pollution emission, the emissions from local industrial zones are serious and exacerbate the situation even more. It is everyone’s responsibility to maintain the air quality. The local enterprises should take on this social responsibility, and shed loading to suppress the air pollutants during this season. The county government will request Formosa to jointly protect the air quality and resident’s health.
