Emphasis on Education
There are four universities in Yunlin County. They are National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, National Huwei Institute of Technology. Beigang Branch, China Medical University, and Transworld Institute of Technology. For the high school education, there are 8 National Senior High Schools, 9 Private Middle Schools, 32 Junior High Schools (including Dounan Senior/Junior High School and Mailiao Senior/Junior High School) and 156 Elementary Schools. There is also a National Yunlin Special Education School for special education. This excellent educational environment has been training many excellent and famous persons for Yunlin and the country.
National Taiwan University also announced in 1999 to establish a branch in Huwei. The branch of National Taiwan University Hospital has been under construction since July 2000. Both projects help to promote the educational standards in Yunlin.
On the other hand, in order to promote life-long learning, the county government has established a community university (with 6 learning centers) to offer county residents more opportunities to learn in 2001.
The county government also tries its best to promote all kinds of sports. There are many sports facilities that meet international standards. The first so called for-all-people games was held here in year 2000. Yunlin County will also host the 2005 National Games.
The facilities that the county government will construct in the near future are: an international standard baseball park at Zhudan Bay in Douliu City, tennis courts in Huwei HSR Station District, a martial art gym in Linnei Junior High School, a volleyball gym in Sihu Junior High School, a fencing gym in Canlin Junior High School, a body-building gym in Wunan Junior High School and etc.
