In the past, the costal Mailiao Township was adjacent to the ocean. Supported by central government’s industry-led policy, the vast area of Formosa Plastics Group Industrial Zone showed up, leaving people the new impression of Mailiao Township. The small coastal village has gone through significant changes ever since. Thus, Mailiao has had more dynamic industrial and commercial activities than before because of Formosa’s Sixth Naphtha Cracking Project. Relatively speaking, the industrial development also brought myriad consequences to local environment. In recent years, to protect villagers’ quality of life, to provide better medical services, to improve students’ education quality, the County Government has been actively driving transportation construction, supporting the establishment of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and transforming educational system and school buildings, even helping the agriculture industry survive under those industrial giants to show its distinctive characteristics.
