On the scene of the Taiwan Lantern Festival, visitors were able to hear information broadcasted in four languages (Mandarin, Taiwanese, English, and Japanese) throughout the night. Setting some global standards, the variation of languages gave the festival an international ambience. Foreign visitors that came specifically to enjoy the Lantern Festival all unanimously gave a big thumbs-up for the event, stating that Yunlin is a friendly international city. In addition to the foreign language broadcasted, Yunlin County Government promoted a multicultural scene by having a “New Residents Themed Lantern Area”. Every day the new residents group from Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Philippines welcomed all visitors to the festival using their respective mother languages followed by themed performances and activities. Looking through the history of the Taiwan Lantern Festival, the “New Resident Themed Lantern Area” is a very original idea.

In addition to the visual component, Yunlin Taiwan Lantern Festival also included a “listen” component to the festival vibe, a continuous live informative radio broadcast. The daily schedule for the Yunlin Taiwan Lantern Festival radio broadcast begins the night with a few words from Yunlin’s internationally known superstar, Xu Shujing, and Pili Puppetry to warmly welcome all visitors. Afterwards the lanterns are illuminated, background music began and the program for the festival commenced. The live radio broadcast hosts announced frequent information throughout the nights in very steady, audible voices, so visitors can feel the consideration and warmth from the organizers. The 2017 Taiwan Lantern Festival successfully transformed the lantern scene into a large scale radio broadcast show.

Yunlin Taiwan Lantern Festival radio broadcast was acclaimed. In addition to rigorous preparation and practice, the hosts also had professional assistance from the collaboration with Zheng Sheng Radio Station, from selecting the hosts for the broadcast, training and the contingency mechanisms to face sudden unexpected events. Even though the lantern festival only exhibited for 9 days, the broadcast demonstrated the meticulous broadcasting standards of Zheng Sheng Radio station, as well as displayed the intricate details and the professional standards expected at the Yunlin Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival Radio Center transformed the lantern scene into a large radio program by introducing the festival’s daily program via radio broadcast, starting with words from internationally known figures, Xu Shujing and Pili Puppetry, followed by announcing performances throughout the night. This innovative demonstration was a result of the collaboration between the Yunlin County Government and Zheng Sheng Radio Station. In the 28 years of the Taiwan Lantern Festival history, it is the first time the festival presented a radio broadcast show throughout the whole event.

Taiwan Lantern Festival ran for 9 consecutive days from February 11th – 19th. Other than the main lantern districts displayed in Huwei and Beigang, everyday there are plenty of activities throughout Yunlin to enjoy a trip that delivers experiences of both “Sight” and “Sound”.
